This thermopolium was one of several in the town and was the equivalent of a fast food outlet. Food was served from jars sunk into the marble-topped counter. A popular sauce was garum, made by fermenting the entrails of various types of fish in salt water. It apparently smelled disgusting but tasted sublime. Chacun à son goût as the French would say.
