Here at Barranco camp we were about 6,500 feet below the summit and the mountain looked awesome. The southern summit glacier fields can be seen spilling over and down to lower glaciers connected by permanent icicles. Reinhold Messner (with Konrad Renzler) climbed the leftmost of these on his famous Breach Wall Direct ascent in 1978. We were to use an easier route to the left and round the back of the summit. Tents of other parties appear in the relative foreground.
