The ascent of Swirral Edge is a firm favourite of mine. (Coming down it is not!) This picture is taken from a highpoint midway along the ridge and shows the ascent to Helvellyn. There is a prominent path to the left of the ridge which I find unpleasant as it is is eroded and slippery. There is a path in places to the right of the ridge which is in a similar state. I recommend scrambling up the rocky centre of the ridge because it is safe, because picking one's way through the jumble of rock slabs and pinnacles occupies the mind, and because that interest takes one's mind off the effort of the ascent. There is a great sense of elation and achievement on reaching the top.
