SICILIAN VOLCANOES

Climbing Etna
Stromboli had erupted three times in a few weeks prior to our visit and we were fortunate to be allowed to the top.

The southeast cone of Etna lies ahead. New lava is on the extreme left

This is aa, a Hawaiian word for lava of this type

After crossing the lava we are back on the snow

Tracks in the snow are clear and well used

This is a panorama of cloud below and distant countryside

The southeast cone of Etna lies ahead. New lava is on the extreme left

Sulphurous smoke pours from the crater. We were given face masks to avoid the worst effects of the choking fumes.

Sulphur deposits around the fumeroles at the crater rim

The pall of smoke drifts on the wind to the valleys and villages below.

The summit is viewed from our lunch spot...

...where this is our view north towards the Aeolian Islands we are soon to visit

There was still plenty of snow on the northern slopes in late May
