This was to be my third holiday of the year, at around Christmas time, and after considering the companies organising trips to the Simien Mountains I chose to book with Explore!, with whom I'd been to the Sicilian Volcanoes earlier in the year. I already had most of the equipment I needed but decided to buy a new sleeping bag and mat for this and future trips. The Mountain Equipment Dreamcatcher 750 and Thermarest Pro-lite 4 may provide better insulation than most people need for such a trip but I hate being cold and hardly ever complain about being warmso they suited me. I was concerned about cramp in my legs, which affects me once or twice a year on the Lakeland fells, so I decided to take leaves out of the books of marathon runners and cyclists and took salt packets (from a fast-food restaurant) and a gel containing antioxidants. I tracked down a map of the Simien Mountains published as "Simen Mountains Trekking Map" by the University of Berne to pore over before I went — it was available at much the same price in Debark.
